Make your own rustic tablecloths

Difficulty: Medium / Time: 2 hours per item / Cost: £5 per item
Whether you’re having an outdoor countryside wedding, or an indoor rustic affair – follow this easy guide to making your own tablecloths. These can transform a formal white table clothed wedding breakfast into a relaxed and informal atmosphere. Or could be used as covers for hay bales for a festival style celebration.
What you will need:
- Hessian material
- Long ruler (or tape measure)
- Scissors
- Coloured thread
- Sewing machine
- Masking tape
- Acrylic paint
- Paintbrush
- Twine
- Sharpie pen
- Pencil
Method: Cut a 1x1m square out of the hessian material. Cut a length of 60cm twine, tie a pencil on one end and a Sharpie pen on the other – making sure there is 50cm in between the two. Measure 50cm (into the middle of the square) and place the pencil in the middle. Then draw a circle using the taught twine and Sharpie. Cut the circle out of the material.
Next, choose the coloured thread you’d like to use and thread into the sewing machine. Sew 1cm around the edge using the zigzag stitch to avoid any of the material fraying. You can then add an extra personal touch by adding painted shapes, letters or numbers in the colours from your wedding. Simply mask off the area you’d like to paint with the masking tape. Using the paintbrush, dab the paint on and leave to dry before removing the tape.
Tip: If you want to paint a more complicated shape onto the tablecloth, you can print in black onto paper and cut out with scissors, secure with masking tape and sponge the paint on. Always test on paper first!
